Our History

GB Lubricants has a long history of manufacturing high-quality lubricants, having been formed in 1877. 140 years later, we are still here today, with a presence all over the world. Here we take you through our story, from our humble beginnings, through the two world wars until the present day.

Where it Began
At the dawn of the mass-market adoption of earliest combustion engines, mineral oils were in their infancy. That year JC Goodall was founded to service the local market in the North East of England.

How it Started
TWG Bates joined the firm and Goodall, Bates & Co was formed with an oil works and office in Newcastle upon Tyne and a grease manufacturing facility in neighbouring Gateshead.

A Change at the Top
JC Goodall retired leaving room for TWG Bates’ two sons, Herbert and Harry to join the firm.

The Business Grew
The business became incorporated and continued to grow demand for its products.

Amalgamation of the Business
The company amalgamated with C & J Todd, Burnside Oil Works, Newcastle upon Tyne, with the newly formed company becoming Goodall, Bates & Todd Limited. Shortly after the amalgamation process the company decided to focus upon their Gateshead facility in which the company is located till this day operating under the name of GB Lubricants.

Continued Growth
The company acquired the lubricants interests of Robert Frazer and Sons Ltd, which was known for its iron and steelworks lubrication, and later acquired Henzell Oil Co. Ltd.

Centenary Celebrations
100 years since the origin of GB Lubricants coincide with Her Majesty The Queens Silver Jubilee Celebrations.

Fleet Expansion
Additional vehicles ready to service the growing fuels business are added to the fleet and GB Lubricants distribution radius continues to grow.

Investment in Infrastructure
Additional Bulk storage tanks arrive on site for fuel storage as the expansion continues.

Expanded Production
Production was expanded with reinforced investment in the facilities to ensure that the needs of customers was met.

An Expanded Fleet
The fleet was expanded further with more vehicles on the road delivering products in more locations than before.

Continued Investment
The site was converted and paved over to give delivery vehicles the access on and off site.

Warehouse expansion
Investment in extra storage facilities at Gateshead site, to keep up with increasing customer demand.

Core Focus on Lubricants and Grease
The fuels arm of the business is sold off to prioritise long term investment and focus in the increasingly successful lubricants business.

Paterson Enterprises Acquires GB Lubricants.
Tim Bates retires from the business and sells GB Lubricants to another very long standing family owned holding group within the UK Oils sector.

A long term investment plan in Gateshead site is commenced
Phase 1 and 2 of an ambitious investment plan begins.

Directing the company into the future
After joining GB Lubricants in 2016 as the Commercial Director, in 2017 Paul Booth was announced as new GB Lubricants Managing Director.

Biodegradable Lubricant Range is relaunched
GB UNIBIO - A range of more sustainable alternatives to mineral based products is comprehensively upgraded and relaunched worldwide as we look to the future.

Gold Award for Sustainability and CSR
GB is awarded the EcoVadis Gold award for sustainability and Corporate and Social Responsibility putting them in the top 5% of similar companies audited worldwide.
